Breeding and Reproduction
Food and hunting
The Ural Owl feeds mostly on voles and they make up 60-90% of its diet [Mikkola 2012]. But it is a flexible hunter and many other prey species have been recorded, mostly different species of birds and mammals.
Beside voles other mammals are also taken incl. shrews, mice and other species like young hares (adult European Hares would be too big). Voles include Water Voles where available.
Among birds, prey species up to the size of Black Woodpecker, Hazel Grouse and Eurasian Jay have been recorded [Mebs & Scherzinger 2008]. [HBW 2015] even mention Black Grouse as prey (maybe mostly young birds). But smaller birds like finches are probably more common.
Other prey items incl. frogs, lizards, insects (mostly beetles) and even fish [Mebs & Scherzinger 2008]. Carrion is also taken [HBW 2015].
