His Father, Paul Wall
Paul Wall, born Paul Michael Slayton in 1981, is a Texan rapper and DJ from the Southern hip-hop scene. Renowned for his slow, drawn delivery, wordplay and diamond grills, Paul Wall has built a career off hustle, dexterity, and Southern charm.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas – Paul Wall started playing on Houston’s streets. He listened to emerging Southern hip-hop, particularly the slowed-down, syrupy beats of DJ Screw. This influence would define his music.
Details about his early education are few but Paul Wall attended Jersey Village High School and studied mass communications for three years at the University of Houston. The attraction to music was too strong however, so he dropped out to make music.
Paul Wall started his music on the streets instead of the mic. He developed his craft promoting Southern artists like T.I. and labels like Cash Money and No Limit. His raucous spirit and local knowledge attracted Michael “5000” Watts of Swishahouse Records. That led Paul Wall to team up with fellow Houstonian Chamillionaire, the Color Changin’ Click.
Together they released independent albums including “Get Ya Mind Correct” (2002) and “Controversy Sells” (2005) – intricate rhymes over slack beats. They were big on the regional hip-hop circuit but had ambitions far beyond Houston.
Atlantic Records recognized Paul Wall as a talent. In 2005 he signed a solo deal and released his critically acclaimed debut The Peoples Champ. The album became a huge commercial success, containing Paul Wall’s Southern drawl and braggadocio lyrics. His debut hit number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
With this success, Paul Wall took advantage of his new fame. Collaborations with major artists including Kanye West and T.I. His second solo album Get Money, Stay True (2007) went gold.
Paul Wall has two children, son William Patrick Slayton (born 2006) and daughter Noelle Slayton (born 2007). He keeps a relatively private life on the personal front but clearly has a very large family following.
Due to the fluctuating nature of the music industry, it is hard to estimate how much Paul Wall actually makes. But his music career, grill business and ongoing endorsements suggest a comfortable financial footing.
