Early Life
Chinua Shakur was born in Chicago and nurtured in a home and culture steeped in civil rights, justice and embracing African American identity. Early childhood was challenging for Chinua since Mutulu Shakur, his father, spent most of his childhood in jail.
Frankly, he faced this challenge while being supported by a healthy family network that influenced his mindset of social justice, black history and his role within a community. His early years were shaped by the revolutionary Background of the Shakur family due to activism of his forefathers.
African origins for the second part of the name also can be inferred from the name “Chinua” Itself the last name could have been possibly inspired by the Nigerian author Chinua Achebe.
Since more of the members of the family participated in social movements and effortlessly supported education, young Chinua listened to profound discussions about civil rights, social justice, and Community development from childhood.
Career
The Achebe family is hardly shy of the public eye. Still, compared to some of his more extrovert relatives, Chinua has tried to establish his path that would allow him to continue his family’s tradition of helping others while staying true to the shared values.
In his career and life styles he has been influenced greatly by the actions of his father in the activism of civil rights and the experiences faced by his family. Unlike his stepbrother Tupac who become a global icon in the music industry, Chinua is quite different, he is selective.
He has concentrated on working with the community, and keeping his father’s social justice activism, but in his own style, and out of the limelight. Everything that Chinua has done in his life, in his work and in his private life has shown that he is a Shakur of principles of social justice and community upliftment.
